Behind the Scenes with Steve Harvey
My family and I were on Family Feud in the beginning of 2016. The three kids of the Nathan family are all brown Asian mutts, my wife is a fair skinned redhead, my younger sister is an ER nurse married to a Mexican Chicago firefighter, and my brother is a Spanish speaking Catholic Priest who breakdances. Quite a testament to the diversity of America if you ask me!
It was pretty cool to be able to meet America’s host for everything, Steve Harvey. He’s a really awesome guy actually, with a great attitude and positive perspective on life. We had a unique opportunity to hear him share from his experiences and give his advice on business and entrepreneurship.
Steve Harvey Leads Audience Into a Q&A
The process of filming is actually much longer than what we see on TV because they bring in a new audience for every 2 shows. During the commercial breaks, the crew stops filming for a time to reset.
During one of these breaks, Steve Harvey decided to do a Q&A with the audience, giving them free reign to ask any questions they wanted.
They were allowed to ask ANY questions they wanted to a highly successful business man and all the audience could come up with is, “What's your favorite food?” and “What do you do with your free time?”, etc.
Although he never expressed it, I have no doubt Steve Harvey was slightly frustrated...until one person chimed in with a question that sent Steve Harvey into a 15 minute entrepreneurship mindset training that was one of the best I've ever heard.
What was the question that Changed the Course of the Conversation?
With sheer anticipation, this individual began, “I'm thinking about starting a business. Do you have any advice for me as I'm thinking about and pursuing this new risky venture?”
Steve Harvey answered in a very simple and straightforward manner, "Stop waiting for all the ducks to be in a row and just go for it!"
He then began to illustrate his point further by using a parachute example and comparing that to the unique gifts we are all given.
Picture yourself standing on the edge of a cliff, watching people fly past with their parachutes spread wide, soaring in the air with such ease. You are immediately overcome with a sense of jealousy, wishing you were as happy and free as they seem. What you fail to realize, however, is that while you are so caught up watching the others enjoy their own experiences, you have your own parachute on your back waiting to be activated.
Steve Harvey's Business Advice...Just Jump!
Steve Harvey's advice, in response to that individual's question, was don't just stand there watching everyone else. If you are sincerely wanting to start a business, then just do it! Just jump off the cliff because you already have everything you need.
Think of the parachute as a metaphor for your God-given gifts. When you are stuck standing on the edge, admiring all the others who seem to have this “parachute” thing figured out, be reminded of the unique gifts each one of us was given and already possess. You already have all you need to take the jump.
However, until you jump, the parachute is useless. Until you take the risk, you will never truly know what you are capable of accomplishing.
4 Steps to Remember for Starting Anything New..
1) Get over the fears.
2) Stop comparing yourself to others.
3) Believe you have what it takes.
4) Just jump.
Now, jumping is often the hardest part. When you first jump, you will likely hit a branch or two on the way down and get nicked by some rocks or flying birds. At first, it’s scary because it’s a new experience that won't always be sunshine and rainbows, but once you get in the clear and become more confident with what is backing you up, that parachute will allow you to experience a whole new way of living.
You now have access to fully utilize your God-given gifts and pursue the life you have always wanted!
Whatever the new chapter or endeavor is, pursue it and be smart about it. Know upfront that it won’t always be smooth sailing, but once you get past the initial struggles, the rest of the journey becomes much more rewarding.
But the only way to fully experience the gifts that God has given you... is to just JUMP!
